stains (2020)

"Stains" talks about my response to the fetishizing and colonizing characteristics of the color “yellow”. Used as a derogatory term against the Asian community, it is a word I heard often growing up in a white-dominated suburb. The red and blue, colors from the Korean flag, represent my armor painting on top of the once dominating yellow. Through this project, I have recognized the pain and suffering behind a history of discrimination and cultural exploitation. "Stains" has taught me to break away from the mask and find my worth behind my own definition of identity.
